about

This song is taken directly from the book of Ecclesiastes, specifically chapters 1, 2, 5, & 12. Solomon's perspective in Ecclesiastes seems cynical, but he speaks in truths. Wisdom and study, pleasure, money, work... all of these things can be good. But, in the end, they do not satisfy... they crumble, they fade. Our relationship with God and with each other will, however, remain. May we tend to these things first and foremost.

lyrics

Wisdom is good
It puts eyes in your head
But it’s foolish to think
It’ll save you from death
Both the fool and the wise man
Are numbering their breaths
And in the end, all this wisdom
Is just meaningless

Pleasure is nice
The taste and touch
But with all your indulgence
You can’t get enough
You can chase every pleasure
Around every bend
But in the end all this chasin’
Is just chasin’ wind

Oooh all’s vanity
Oooh all is vanity

Workin' is good
Money keeps you fed
But you can’t take it with you
When you are dead
When all that you made
Will all turn to rust
In the end it won’t matter
When you turn to dust

Beauty is sweet
To the beholder’s eye
You know it when you see it
And it echoes the light
But age and opinion
Bids beauty goodbye
And in the end the beholder
Just changes his mind

Oooh all is vanity
Ooh all is vanity
Oooh all is vanity
Ooh all is vanity

Just enjoy your life
With the one you love
Fear and follow
The God above
‘Cause this is the whole
Duty of man
And in the end you gotta do
The best that you can

‘Cause ooh all is vanity
Ooh all is vanity
Oooh all is vanity
Ooh all is vanity
