about

From Jonah's prayer of gratitude in Jonah 1:17-2:10 (see also Matthew 12:40).

I had always thought that Jonah's prayer in chapter 2 was a cry for help and for salvation from the fish's belly. In actuality, the great fish was salvation and mercy for Jonah. It saved him from the watery grave that he deserved, and Jonah thanked and praised God for this salvation.

lyrics

Down in the belly of a big ol’ fish
Get on my knees, give thanks for this
‘Cause I had run in the other direction
When my heart pulled an insurrection

I was down in the belly of the deep
I was down in the heart of the sea
All your waves and your billows crashed over me
But you saved me from the bottom of the sea

I called to the Lord from the bottom of the pit
From the mountain roots I remembered him
Death barred the doors and shut the gates
But He heard my voice and He came to save!

I was down in the belly of the deep
I was down in the heart of the sea
All your waves and your billows crashed over me
But you saved me from the bottom of the sea

Oh that big fish gonna spit me out
Oh that big fish gonna spit me out
I’m gonna set my feet on the solid ground
After three days way down
