about

From Leviticus 4:32-35. See also Hebrews 9:22, 10:1-18.

The first verse of this song is written from the perspective of an Israelite making a sin offering. When a sin offering was made, the person making it would lay his hand on the top of the animal's head and confess his sin over it. In this way, his sin was "imputed" to this innocent animal, which would die in his place.

Can you imagine the amount of blood spilled daily in the Temple? Sin had to be paid for, but it had to be paid for over and over again because the blood of bulls and goats and lambs could not truly take away sin and make peace with a holy God.

Jesus Christ came to be the perfect, once-and-for-all sin offering. Our sin has been put in his account, and he has died in our place.

lyrics

All of my transgressing
All my sins confessing
Over the head
Over the head

Of a lamb pure and white
A lamb who should not die
In my stead
In my stead

Holy, you are holy
You said be holy
For I am

Holy, I am not holy
The blood is flowing
For what I am

Year after year
Blood must be shed here
Our sins are the same
Our sins are the same

The daily sacrificing
The endless reminding
Guilt still remains
Guilt still remains

Will there a come a day when a
Sacrifice will be enough
Will there come a day when
You will need no more blood
