about

From Acts 8:1-3; 9:1-19; 26:1-23 (especially 19-23); 28:20. Also 1 Timothy 1:15.

I wrote this song from the perspective of Paul, who had an amazing story of conversion - from one who travelled from city to city persecuting "to death" the earliest followers of Jesus to one who travelled from city to city proclaiming Jesus as Messiah and Savior. I used the concept of blindness vs. sight a lot in this song in order to tie the verses together. Several themes found in Acts come through in this song as well, I hope: 1) that Jesus was not the leader of some new cult religion but was the fulfillment the promises of God in the Old Testament law and prophets, 2) that the hope found in Jesus was for everyone, not just Israel.

lyrics

I am the man who held the coats
Of the blind men who threw the stones
I ravaged as an enemy
To save our laws and history
But blind like them, I could not see

Breathing murder I hit the streets
When a blinding light surrounded me
Said why won’t you just let me be
When you ravage them, you ravage me
In the bright light, I started to see

That Israel’s hope is the hope of all men
Both the law and the prophets they spoke of Him
That suffering death, He would rise first
Proclaiming the light to all the earth
Forgiving the sin of those who turn

Oh for 3 days I stayed in the dark
Both fear and faith they filled my heart
When the Spirit came and scales fell free
This murderous man could finally see
This murderous man could finally see

That Israel’s hope is the hope of all men
Both the law and the prophets they spoke of Him
That suffering death, He would rise first
Proclaiming the light to all the earth
Forgiving the sin of those who turn

Once an enemy, now a son
The chief of sinners for all I’ve done
Turn from darkness and to the light
Repent, believe, unshut your eyes
Repent, believe, unshut your eyes

‘Cause Israel’s hope is the hope of all men
Both the law and the prophets they spoke of Him
That suffering death, He would rise first
Proclaiming the light to all the earth
Forgiving the sins of those who turn
Forgiving the sins of those who turn
