about

Verse 1 comes from Lamentations 1:1-2, Verse 2 from 3:2, 16-17, Chorus from 3:21-23, Verse 3 from 3:4-11.

This song is told from the perspective of Jeremiah, the writer of Lamentations. In this book, Jeremiah is mourning Babylon’s destruction of Jerusalem, which is also God’s judgement against Israel’s southern kingdom (Judah) for their continual idolatry (Lam. 1:18).

He feels the sorrow of it all personally, comparing God to a lion lying in wait for him, breaking his bones, walling him in. Yet ultimately, Jeremiah trusts this same God and calls him faithful, loving and merciful.

There are hints of hope for the future of God’s people. Like many of the Psalms, this book instructs us that we can be honest with God about our pain, while continuing to trust him.

lyrics

How lonely sits the city of God
Like a widow, a slave to be bought
Where are all the lovers she sought?
Weeping bitterly
Tears upon her cheeks

And my soul is bereft of peace
In the gravel, grinding my teeth
I have forgotten what happiness means
And all the light is gone
All my hope is feels wrong

But this I call to mind
And therefore I have hope
If I am here in the bottom of the pit
I cling to this like, my last rope

Your love never ceases
Your mercy never ends
They are new every morning
Great is your faithfulness
Great is your faithfulness

Like a lion lying in wait
He’s walled me in so I can’t escape
Broken my bones, my flesh wastes away
Besieged with bitterness
I am desolate
