about

From 1 Samuel 1.

This song is from Hannah's perspective, who is struggling with infertility. Her prayer to God is so honest and raw and persistent. As readers, we have the benefit of knowing that eventually God did bless Hannah, giving her Samuel. But Hannah didn't know this. In fact, she came back to the temple of God year after year, pouring out her heart to the point where the priest thought she must be drunk.

We can learn a lot from Hannah... First, that God cares about things like infertility and personal struggle. Second, that God is pleased with honest, raw, persistent prayers like hers.

lyrics

I’m pouring out my heart to my God
I’m pouring out my heart to my God
Because I want to be a mother
Oh but still I am not
So I’m pouring out my heart to my God

Year after year I come into your house
My prayers are sincere, of this I have no doubt
But still my womb is closed
And they’re laughing out loud
So my heart to my God I pour out

I weep, I cannot eat and my heart is so sad
My husband does not understand why I want this so bad
But God if you will give me this
I promise I will give it back
I will give it right back to my God
