about

This song touches on all 4 chapters of Malachi, with the chorus coming from Malachi 3:7.

In many of the books of the prophets, including Malachi, we see the theme of judgment and the promise of a great and terrible "day of the Lord". In Malachi, God is condemning His people for breaking their covenant with Him. They are hopelessly guilty and yet God offers them a new promise: "return to me, and I will return to you." In light of the coming judgment that they deserve, this is amazing news.

This promise is still true and has ultimately been fulfilled in Jesus. Through Jesus Christ's work on the cross, we can return to God. And He promises to return to us.

lyrics

I loved and chose you
Promises made
I went and told you
How to keep the faith

But you’ve been half-hearted
And I’ve been short-changed
You have departed
From all my ways

So return, return, return
Return, return, return

You have forgotten
The wife of your youth
Your priests are filthy
They don’t speak the truth

Robbing your God
And the working man
Oppress the widows
And the orphans

So return, return, return
Return, return, return
If you return to me, if you
Then I will return to you
Return, return, return

The sun will rise
And bring the heat
For some it burns
For some the wings

Bring healing
To wounds cut deep
Light for darkness
Joy for weeping

So return, return, return
Return, return, return
If you return to me, if you
Then I will return to you
Return, return, return
