Strong as Death (Song...)

from The Scripture to Music Project DEMOS [A Sides] by Caroline Cobb

about

This is no doubt this is the sexiest, most sensual song I've ever written... and it's so crazy and wonderful that it comes directly from the Bible. This song takes both the male and female perspective in Solomon's love poem. The first verse if from the male's perspective and the second is from the female's. Often, this book is compared to God's love for Israel or his people, but I don't think we should glaze over the fact that it's also about that thing that God created that starts with a 'S' and ends with a 'X' and has an 'E' in the middle... Ok, blushing now.

lyrics

He:
You are beautiful, my love
Your eyes like doves
Hidd’n behind your veil

I’m a captive entranced
With just one glance
My heart begins to fail

Honey drips from your lips
From your neck and from your hips
And your mouth
Is a scarlet thread

You are flawless and sweet
Your hair, your cheeks
Perfume annoints your head

Oh I am my love’s
And she is mine
Upon my heart she seals me
Love as strong as death
And fierce like fire
Wounding as it heals me

She:
You are radiant, my love
Your eyes like doves
Your name is oil poured out

And desire like a fetter
No wine tastes better
Than the kisses of your mouth

I will give you my love
All for you, I’ve stored it up
In my heart you’ve awakened a burning

So until the day breathes
And shadows flee
Stay with me, love til morning

Oh, I am my love’s
And he is mine
Upon my heart he seals me
Love as strong as death
And fierce like fire
Wounding as it heals me
