The Place to Hide (Zeph.)

from The Scripture to Music Project DEMOS [A Sides] by Caroline Cobb

about

Taken from Zephaniah 1:2-18; 3:8-20.

A major theme of Zephaniah is "the day of the Lord" - the day he returns and justly judges the earth. The description of that day in the book of Zephaniah is terrifying and sobering...the jealous wrath of God consumes and destroys those who follow other gods or who are indifferent to Him. And yet, in chapter 3, we find that God, in His mercy, is also offering Himself as a place to hide from that same wrath.

I think the chorus of this song is ultimately fulfilled in Christ. Through Christ's death on the cross, God is both just and justifier (Romans 3:26). Like the boat that Noah built, or the rock in which Moses hid from God's glory, the cross is our safehouse - covering us from the holiness of God that would surely consume us in our sin and disobedience.

lyrics

The day is coming and coming fast
A day of weeping, a day of wrath
A day of ruin, dark, and gloom
Oh the day, the day is coming soon

The ones who think He’ll never act
So they sit complacent, growing fat
The ones divided, bowing twice
From a jealous fire you cannot hide

Oh He’s both the refuge and consuming flame
Oh He brings the judgment and He mediates
Oh He sends the justice and He justifies
Sends the wrath that finds you and the place to hide

To the one who hides beneath his wing
He’ll cover you and o’er you sing
Love that quiets, joy and bliss
And the fire will burn clean your lips

Oh He’s both the refuge and consuming flame
Oh He brings the judgment and He mediates
Oh He sends the justice and He justifies
Sends the wrath that finds you and the place to hide

The day is coming and coming fast
A day of weeping, a day of wrath
A day of ruin, dark, and gloom
Oh the day, the day is coming soon
