about

From Philemon 1:8-21.

This song was probably one of the hardest to write, simply because the book is so short and it's topic touches on something controversial. In this letter, Paul writes to his Christian brother Philemon from prison, specifically about Philemon's runaway slave Onesimus. Paul has somehow met and come to love Onesimus, who has become a believer. Paul sends him back to Philemon, knowing that it's the right thing to do. Yet, he asks Philemon to take Onesimus back as he would accept Paul himself, to forgive him in Christ.

lyrics

I know he was your slave
He was just a runaway
But he’s become my friend
Since I’ve been in prison

No, he’s more like a son
A servant to the holy one

So I send him back to you
I hope I know what you will do

Oh, do the right thing
Take him back as you would take me
Cause you see
He is now your brother, just like me
Cause he believes

If he owes you anything
Charge it all to me

But remember you owe me
For the life that set you free

Oh, do the right thing
Take him back as you would take me
Cause you see
He is now your brother, just like me
Cause he believes
