about

From 1 Kings 8:22-61. In this passage, Solomon is dedicating and praying for the newly-built Temple. In his prayer, he seems to cover every possible scenario for Israel: drought, famine, plague, victory or defeat in war, captivity, etc. Usually, these are listed as possible consequences for Israel's sin. Solomon asks that the Temple - the place where God dwelled on earth - would always be a place where Israel could turn for forgiveness and salvation. No matter how dire their circumstance, or how awful their sin, Solomon asks that God would return to them if they returned to Him.

lyrics

If the heavens shut their doors
And there is no rain
Oh Lord would you hear?

If because of sin we lie in defeat
But if we turn again
Oh Lord would you hear?

If there be any famine or plague
Would you heart the prayers that we make
When we stretch our hands out to this place
Would you hear?

When a foreigner comes in
To seek your name
Would you listen, would you hear?

When we go to war and pray toward this place
Would you fight for us
Would you hear?

If our enemies take us away
Because of sin they make us into slaves
If we repent and turn to You and pray
Would you hear?

The heavens can’t hold you in
And yet you’ve chosen to dwell with men
To keep your eyes and your ears open
To this house, to hear

May you incline our hearts
To walk in all your ways
Set us apart and be near

May we stay wholly true
As on this day
May we listen to you, and may we hear
