about

From Zechariah 9:9-10, 14-17; 13:1.

Zechariah was written over 500 years before Jesus was born, and yet this book clearly speaks of him. When Zechariah prophesied, the people of God had returned from exile in Babylon, but they were discouraged, weak, oppressed, and kingless.

But Zechariah promises that, if the people turn to God, He will set things right. A righteous king will come, and he will bring salvation. He will bring peace, He will fight for Jerusalem, and He will redeem His lost and scattered people.

God also promises to open up a "fountain" that will truly make the people clean from sin and idolatry. 1700's Hymnist William Cowper referred to this fountain when he wrote "There is a fountain filled with blood/ Drawn from Emmanuel's veins/ And sinners plunged beneath that flood/ Lose all their guilty stains."

lyrics

Rejoice Jerusalem
Your king comes
He is righteous and He means to save you

Rejoice Jerusalem
Your king comes
On a donkey, He is humble before you

Put away your chariots
Put away your horses
He comes to bring you peace

And from the River
To the ends of the earth
He’ll rule from sea to sea
This is your king, this is your king

Rejoice Jerusalem
He appears
And His arrow will go forth like lightning

He blows the trumpet
And they will fear
It’s the Lord, who for you is fighting

The sheep He scattered
Oh He will gather
He comes to redeem

Oh He is beautiful
He’ll wear you like a jewel in a crown
For He is your king
He is your king, He is your king

There is a fountain
Will never cease
And it can make you forever clean

There is a fountain
Will never cease
And it flows from the veins of our king
