This song is written from Nehemiah's perspective, specifically covering his prayer in chapter 1. Nehemiah was living in exile in Babylon when he heard that Jerusalem's walls were broken down and that the people - God's people - were unprotected, ashamed, and in distress. His reaction and his prayer show us that he had a humble and contrite heart, he valued God's glory above all, he believed God's promise and covenant, and he put a lot of stock in God's mercy, steadfast love, and forgiveness. I want to pray like this!
